In Michigan last week, voters in Senate Districts 8 and 28 elected new members in special elections. The special elections for the two seats came up this year after the Republican incumbents holding the seats resigned to take other positions. Republican candidates in both races held onto the seats for their party, allowing the Republican delegation to maintain its makeup in the Michigan Senate heading into the 2022 election cycle.

In state-level elections, the race for governor is the marquee contest on the ballot, setting the tone for the next two to four years in state government. And several upcoming governor’s races are expected to garner more attention — and be more contentious — than usual due to governors’ COVID-related decisions and rumored 2024 presidential aspirations. We’ve looked at the initial fundraising numbers in the 2022 gubernatorial races in the swing states. Even before the deadline for challengers to jump in, the incumbents are actively fundraising, with Abbott and DeSantis leading the pack.  

The For the People Act of 2021—known as H.R. 1 in the House and S.1 in the Senate—was introduced in the US House on January 4 as a primary concern of the Biden administration, and passed in the U.S. House on March 3rd.
