When Texas’ last legislative session gaveled to a close in late May, conservatives from across the state were not shy about expressing their disappointment with the results. Leaders of large and powerful grassroots organizations like Julie McCarty of True Texas Project, JoAnn Fleming of Grassroots America We The People, Michael Quinn Sullivan of Empower Texans and Elizabeth Graham of Texas Right to Life described the results of the session as “purple,” “loser,” and “nothing,” making ominous, albeit veiled, threats to withhold funding.

Spanning seven counties in Central Texas, the HD 13 seat was occupied by State Representative Leighton Schubert who shocked politicos when he announced — just a few weeks before the filing deadline — that not only was he declining to seek re-election, but he also intended to resign his position before the current term was over. Schubert cited the need to focus on his family.

The 2018 race was Round Two of a Keffer-backed successor vs. Lang. Jim Largent, superintendent of Granbury ISD, was openly supported by Keffer and many of Texas’ more liberal Republican advocacy groups. Largent, Keffer, and these outside groups were ultimately unsuccessful as Lang easily won reelection.
