Before 2016, Michigan was largely considered behind the “blue wall” of key states that reliably voted in favor of the Democratic Presidential ticket. After Donald Trump’s narrowly-won upset flipped the state red in the last presidential election, the outcome at all levels feels far less assured. In state politics, Michigan’s government is split, with a Democratic Governor in Gretchen Whitmire, and Republicans controlling both chambers of the state legislature.
